Smart Playscape
TAI Cheuk-wai, Gervas, CHO Lok-man, YUEN Wan-ching, Ling Pak-wai
“Smart Playscape” focuses on transforming Sau Mau Ping Road Safety Town into an inclusive hub for children, families, and seniors. Our proposal features a transparent entrance and vibrant road graphics to bring in more visitors. An innovative ramp offers multi-dimensional learning on road safety, and integrated digital tools provide immersive educational experiences. The design promotes community engagement and safer travel habits, combining safety education with leisure. Ultimately, this renovation aims to create a model Road Safety Town that fosters connections and reduces accidents through proactive education.
Juror Comments
The jurors commended the team's project for its strong and compelling focus on road safety, recognising its robust connection with the community. They praised the effective interior layout and the strategic exterior connections, particularly the footbridge and inclusive ramp access, which was noted as an exemplary feature catering to users of all ages. The emphasis on the height of the footbridge, enhanced by a vibrant use of colour, effectively promoted the theme of road safety. Additionally, the integration of technology with the physical structure of the footbridge was applauded as a forward-thinking initiative that highlights the future of road safety education.
However, concerns were raised regarding the budget for the extended footbridge, and the jurors advised revisiting the design of the building façade and adjoining boundary wall to create a more connective and welcoming gesture to the surrounding community.

SafeSteps City: A New Chapter in Road Safety Learning
CHAU Lok-kan
“SafeSteps City” imagines Sau Mau Ping Road Safety Town as an immersive environment for learning road safety. The design enhances visibility and curiosity through stepping entrance and urban windows, fostering responsible behaviour and building a safer community for all.
Juror Comments
The jurors commended the winning team for their well-considered and comprehensive urban design, particularly noting the strategic corner treatment that facilitates easy entry and circulation, effectively capturing the main flow of pedestrian traffic and serving the community. This design creates a welcoming entrance from the neighbourhood into the Road Safety Town and adheres to budgetary constraints with its direct, simple, and neat approach. The decision to adaptively reuse the existing building, rather than demolishing it, was also recognised as an efficient strategy that contributes positively to the project's feasibility.
However, the jurors observed that the theme of road safety could be more pronounced, and the overall visual appeal could benefit from enhancements to make it more exciting and visually impactful.
Juror Comments
The jurors commended the winning team for their intention to create an inclusive and innovative environment focused on road safety education, while also serving as a community-centred public space. The design effectively establishes a welcoming entrance from the main road, enhancing accessibility and strengthening the connection of the Road Safety Town to the community. Its emphasis on inclusivity for all age groups is evident, and the consistent use of graphics and colour creates a strong, readable public identity.
To further enhance the proposal, the jurors suggested making the design feel more vibrant and appealing to children. Additionally, they recommended reimagining the boundary wall to be more open and interactive, fostering a better connection between the facility and the surrounding public realm.

SO Yin-hang, YU Tai-nai, LIU Meng-yi, CHEUNG Ting-hin
By meeting the diverse needs of children aged 2- 8, the elderly, and persons with disabilities, the project fosters interaction and connection among visitors. Key features include an AI bumper car arena with educational and entertainment functions, VR driving simulator, children’s cinema, co‑working space, and café — attracting families across Hong Kong and tourists. Group visitors benefit from parking for 4.5‑meter tour buses, accessible vehicles, and seven‑seater vans, with dining at the outdoor tea terrace. The SmartPLAY app provides AI itinerary suggestions, facility reservations, and play tracking. Amenities include nursing rooms, stroller lockers, audio library, accessible pathways, and restrooms. The redeveloped Sau Mau Ping Road Safety Town is both a hub for road safety learning and an inclusive, innovative community landmark.
Juror Comments
The jurors praised the team's design as a balanced solution, recognising the pitched roof as an iconic focal point that not only establishes a fresh aesthetic and identity for the Road Safety Town but also serves as a new branding element. This design creates a lightweight, airy atmosphere, enhanced by strategically placed skylights that contribute to a modern and inviting environment.
The adaptive reuse approach reflects a strong commitment to sustainability while yielding an aesthetically pleasing form that integrates vibrant community life, incorporating amenities such as a restaurant and co-working spaces designed to attract a diverse range of stakeholders.
To elevate the project further, the jurors suggested enhancing the design of the outdoor spaces and placing a stronger emphasis on the road safety theme throughout the entire project, ensuring greater impact and engagement with the community.
1ST RUNNER-UP
Move, Learn, Play - All the Way!
WONG Ka-lok, CHAN Cheuk-yin, WU Ya-yun, Dancy, TSUI Tsz-shan, FONG Kwan-kiu
A transformable playscape / learnscape is proposed for all-age participation to address the dual function of leisure park and road safety education. The interactive kiosks, functionally transformable depending on school visit or public opening hour, convert road safety education into a playful, dynamic experience.
Juror Comments
The jurors commended the team for their innovative approach to designing the Road Safety Town from a child's perspective, resulting in a playful, refreshing, and child-friendly environment. They noted the thoughtful use of scale and colour, which is both appropriate and practical, effectively facilitating clear circulation for diverse user groups and allowing for multiple non-interrupting pathways that enhance the venue's operations. The establishment of templates for various types of play equipment in the open space was recognised as a significant strength, providing a unifying framework while encouraging creative variation.
However, the jurors pointed out the limited emphasis on interior design and recommended enhancing the overall architectural imagery to achieve a more powerful and cohesive visual impact throughout the project.
2ND RUNNER-UP
THE DECK- An elevated road safety journey
TANG King-to, Anson
“THE DECK” reimagines Sau Mau Ping Road Safety Town as an inclusive, modern space. Its two-storey design enhances education and engagement through immersive environments, integrating road safety simulations and fostering community connections while maintaining accessibility and iconic features.
Juror Comments
The jurors praised the winning team for their bold and impactful design, which involved the complete demolition of the existing structures on site. They highlighted the family-oriented approach, particularly the thoughtful separation of functions that dedicates the first floor to parental relaxation, with an observation deck that fosters interaction and allows parents to oversee their children playing in the ground-floor area.
The new curvilinear architecture not only creates a striking contrast with its surroundings but also establishes a distinctive landmark, offering a novel spatial experience that invites community engagement.
However, the jurors raised significant concerns regarding the high costs associated with the scheme, which could pose challenges to buildability within realistic budget constraints. Additionally, they noted that the road safety theme—central to the project's purpose—could be more prominently and effectively integrated to enhance its overall impact.
